Hey guys! Thought I could ask you here since not even the tech at EMG knew how to do it, and Ibanez won't let them know either :D .

I have bought a set of EMG's for my Ibanez and while the jack and everything seems alright the pickup switch is giving me a headache. Its a 3 way and where the soldering is there is like 12 small metal pins arranged in 3 rows of 4. How the hell do I wire this?

Easiest way to figure this out is to get a fuse tester, checking each pin in each position and seeing which pins are connected in what positions. Then from that, figure out how to wire it.

Is it an Ibanez SZ?

Here's the table for that switch (from 300m's thread last week) -

Switch

Neck     CTR    Bridge

O X X   X X O    X X O

O X X   O X X    X X O

O X X   O X X    X X O

O X X   X X O    X X O

You'll only need half the switch - I drew up a diagram that's in that thread, if you want to take a look.

I still cant seem to understand, my pickups have one wire each with a braid that is to be soldered to the back of the volume and then the signal that is going to the switch. Its really confusing me.

EDIT: Heres the passive pickup wiring for mine.

EDIT2: Hmm, I may have understood it now, but Ill wait for an answer anyway so I dont screw stuff up.

tell us what you think you understand

that means we can tell you what to do and what not to do...well not me...im a n00b, but im sure the others will find it useful.

btw, i personally feel its better to strip everything out and replace it

but its up to you

What's difficult to understand? Ground wires (braids) go to ground point, red wires go to the battery clip and white wires hook up like this:

Disconnect the bridge ground, hook up the battery and you're there! Follow the EMG diagram for wiring a stereo jack to switch power off when the guitar is unplugged. HTH! :D

I f*cked up. I soldered just like it was in the schematic and then when I tried it in action it was just noise. I'm guessing its some sort of grounding problem or a bad connection because when I touch the pots the noise increased, alot. And I could only hear a faint sound of the strings while I had gain on full with boost on, plus the noise was unbearable.

What did I do wrong? I'm not very good at soldering so could it have been some bad joints like I said?

Oh and when I put the pickups in the cavities the "quick connecter" was in the way and they were like way high and I was forced to have the action raised alot.
