kato
Hi, Just starting out and I think I am ready to order the wood for a les paul build. I have all the dimensions for the material except I need some help on the size of a mahogany neck blank. What would you suggest for a minimum width and thickness for a blank? Thanks
Guitarfrenzy
It depends on alot of factors, but a 3x3x30" for a one piece is big enough. If your going for a scarf joint headstock, extra wood glued on heel, and gluing on the headstock wings you can get by with smaller piece of wood. Like a 1x2x30". It really just depends on how your going to build it.
jay5
I would think that a 2" wide blank might be too thin, you need it to be at least as wide as the heel end of the neck. 2" will be too narrow.
javacody
I agree, the smallest I would go is 3" wide.
doug
It never hurts to have a little leftover....ya know, just in case. Go for the 3x3x30 then you'll know there's enough. -Doug

orgmorg
No, because when you realise that the neck needs to be 2 1/4" at the heel, you will have to buy another piece. But then, yes, you will have plenty left over.
