Quick Question (long Shaft Pot?)

I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what you would use a long shaft pot for rather than a standard pot. I'd like to buy a wiring kit for my project, but I don't know whether to get a long shaft pot kit or standard. Thanks!

You need the longer shaft for a thick topped guitar like a les paul.
