Practice with Bridge Installation?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if it would be OK to practice installing my Floyd bridge on a scrap piece? The thing I am worried about is removing it after having it put together. Will I likely damage it when pulling it back out?

If anyone has any tips on things to watch for when installing it, I would really appreciate it. It's an OFR and I plan to recess mount it.

Thanks,

Dave

I think that would be a good idea. it would allow you to check the drill bit size for the posts without taking any chances with the body. I don' think you'll be damaging the wood when pulling the bushings back out. they're press-fit, so they're not supposed to be stuck in there, they're just supposed to sit pretty tight.

Thanks,

I was worried that I might damage the posts, or other hardware when pulling it out of my scrap wood.

When you say that it should be tight, does that mean that I should avoid hammering it in or forcing it in some other way? Do those posts go over the wood screws or do they replace the need for screws?

When you hammer it in I hope your using a rubber mallet or leather faced one, otherwise you might want to use a nice thick piece of cloth over the top to avoid damaging it if all you have is a steel hammer.

The anchors actually spread the wood some with the ribs around the outside, Just put the trem post's in and pull the whole assembly back out with a piece of cloth and a pair of plyers, you'll do fine :D

Do you have a set of router templates to do this or are you freehanding it?

I could write a book on tips for doing this, but I'll tell ya, the video Stew-Mac sells that has Dan Erlewine showing tremolo installations is just so superior I cannot recommend it enough.

Every time I go to route for another Floyd, I watch that sucker just One More Time! Dan is the Man!
