What Should The Final Coat Be?

I've looked through the tutorials etc on this site but sadly they dont seem to answer my question.

After all the colour(s) have been applied what should the last coat be to protect the paintwork/add a shine?

Depends on what finish you're actually applying but if your painting then it should be a clear lacquer of the same type as the colour coats ie: cellulose clear over cellulose colour.

Im not certain what Im using yet although it'll probably car-spray paint.

Those are usually polyeurathanes, so you'll use a polyeurethane clear.
