I've had this idea floating around for a while. Would it be possible to make a custom pickguard out of a piece of unused printed circuit board? would the copper tracks be a problem? The bottom side would be covered with an insulator of some sort, so accidental contact with the electronics wouldn't short them out.

Quite the opposite - a whole sheet of metal on the underside will help with earthing and mor eimportantly SHIELDING! Go for it mate - I think it'll look cool and will definately not have any major issues.
