Changing Matte Black Finish.

I have a guitar with a smooth, matte/satin black finish and was thinking about changing it to glossy black. Instead of stripping the old paint off, I was curious, would be possible to just add some sort of clear coat to the existing finish? Does anyone know what sort of results I could expect from doing so? TIA, Brian
