I was planning on entering a solid quilt 7-string that's almost complete. With all the other talent in there, I will feel really good about losing in a landslide. You know, like the Astros probably feel like "well we lost, but at least we lost to the best!" And Matt, I hope I made it clear that your guitar is awesome too. Like Fryovanni, the stuff I mentioned was really minor, but contributed to the vote because it was so tight this month (and this year) Since Drak was calling out the "non-Matt" voters, I thought I'd share some specifics to back up my "non-Matt" vote. Although they're minor. The "gangly" reference was in how to my eyes, the cutaways don't flow into eachother, or lead the eye to the waistline smoothly. I think the new Carvin carvetops have the same issue. But I mean, that's the way you drew it, so it is perfect for you. Heck there're some guitars I think are hideous, and they sell lots of them. We have large orders of Special Laser Guided Telecaster Munitions on express order from The Telecaster Homeland Security and Munitions Dept. We are gathering a vast array of Telecaster Armored Personnel Transports for the storming of the Australian Continent. Specially trained Telecaster Yakuza night-fighters. Sinister-looking Telecaster Midgets, highly trained for 'below-the-belt' warfare. I 'hear' on the by and by that there's also a rouge outfit of Telecaster Chemical Weapon Specialists stealthily making their way south even now. Telecaster Aircraft Carriers w/ massive Forward Facing Cannon to soften up the beaches of Oz. As a builder, you also know how much time you spend designing, building, and perfecting your instrument, and after all the hard work how proud you are of that instrument. That's the problem, because when someone gets critical, it tends to hurt your feelings even more. Especially when you feel you've done everything right, and excuted your dream into reality. It doesn't mean that I think the JV-1 design is flawless, it's not and I look forward to the challenge of making it an even better guitar. Just because people on PG didn't like this one, they may love the next one, who knows, who cares, it's just a contest anyway, that's based on how a guitar looks, and not on playability and sound. I understand that, and that's cool. But simply put, I'm not going to stop building guitars, it's too much fun and no matter if I never win a GOTM, I'm going to hold my head up, because I truely feel that each one of you who could play this guitar would love it. So what if the JV-1 001 didn't turn any heads, I'm still going to enjoy rocking out each weekend onstage with it. Also I want to personally thank, fryovanni, lovekraft, idch, marksound, and Gorecki for the kind words. It means a lot to me that you guys actually took the time to lift my spirits, and I owe each and everyone of you. That's why I like PG, not just because of the guitars, but because of the friendships we get out of it. This was a learning experience for me, it showed me that no matter how hard you try sometimes things don't work out the way you think. That being said, I wouldn't have taken this experience away if I could. I'm going to keep on smiling and striving to make better guitars, even if I never get another vote, at least I will be moving the right direction. I also have no hard feeling toward you Frank, or your opinions on my guitar. The reason I installed the Leo Quan that way was because I had researched some old PRS that had a similar bridge on it and used it as my guide. Probably not the best thing to do but still the bridge works great and also it has Tone Pros Locking Studs that I got from specialtyguitars.com and not the standard ones. I thought the same thing when the Floyd Bird got knocked down, and remember, both Perry and Jeremy have have flatliners in the GOTM too, so we all have tasted defeat with perfectly fine-ass guitars like yours is. So, it's really just for fun in the end, I don't take any of it personally and I know the vote of the GOTM (or lack thereof) in no way reflects the true quality of the guitars involved sometimes. Just remember it's for -fun only- and you still walk away smiling no matter what happens. Now, on to the Attack of OzLand! frank falbo Posted October 28, 2005 Report Share Posted October 28, 2005 (edited) Yeah, the Tonepros studs pretty much negate the issue of how far back the bridge sits on the studs, from a sonic standpoint. Man, you're taking this way too hard, Matt. The 7-string I'm hopefully entering in December is the pinnacle of design for me. The shape is pretty original, and I put more time into it than any other build, getting the carve just right, etc. The sounds and feel are perfect for me. My whole heart and soul are poured into it. And I still fully expect to get my clock cleaned by some Drak tele or Ormsby soloist. Not to mention the Leviathan that's already in there. I'm sure someone will say my horn is too long, or they don't like the way the pickup is angled, or whatever. Or "why isn't there a pickguard?" LOL. It's no big deal. Everyone has their thing. Look at it this way, about 50% of the voters are kids who only own a squire and know little, if anything about this stuff. I was really surpised when Phil beat me out for GOTM two months ago(maybe 3, i don't remember). I mean, how many people are building neck through semi-hollows? You can not predict this stuff. A lot of times, it makes little more sense then a coin toss. This competition takes nothing away from any guitar. You have to remember why you're building these things. WHAT I DO CARE about is that Dan has a guitar that FAR exceeds his original expectations (and design parameters) and plays better than his current best guitar. I get off on having people reacting to my guitars in person.... The dude who has borrowed one for a gig, without doing a soundcheck, and the smile on their face as they play it in front of a few hundred people.... the guy who picks up his brand new custom and strums a D chord to see how well the compensated nut works, and realises his search to find a cure for that well known issue is at last solved..... The big muscly dude with a body full of tribal tattoo's and a mohawk, who literally cries in the workshop when he is presented his new baritone... the client who views the camo guitar out in the carpark as i take the final shots of it, and his reaction as he plays it to feels the playability.... all real word reactions. THEY ARE WHAT MATTERS. GOTM is just another feather in the hat, but should not be something to get upset over. Hell, ive got people who DELIBERATLEY vote against me because i upset them in a thread 18 months ago... pfft... whatever!! Well if that's how it's going to be decided...America could take over Canada(or Australia for that matter) any day we please, and Australia barely even counts as a country. It's more like a province really. Also, I'd like to note that America really isn't as tele-crazy as our December GOTM candidate is making us out to be. In reality, their designated customized appointments will outflank, outbank, outshoot, and outrock any dadblurned Jackson/Suhr/Thorn/Youfillintheblankwithyourfavoritewankermakeroutthere. I just happen to think the Tele shape is the most comfortable shape out there for ME. The neck hangs -exactly- where I want it, the body sits -exactly- where I like it. This is a decision not based on Buck Owens (although Buck IS God) but based on the guitar that suits me better than any other out there, and that's what I'm building for. Not for looks, not for street cred, but for -my- playing style and habits, the shape of a Telecaster reigns supreme among all others. AND my Teles have an absolute versatility of tone that is heretofore unseen or heard 'round the planetary systems with my custom harnesses. Touche', ...my good man.
