Read this: Guitar Amp Evolution It's probably the best beginner article on tube amp architecture that I've seen. Also, keep in mind that the early Marshalls were just homebrewed clones of the tweed Bassman, the seminal MESA Boogies were Fender Princetons that young Randall modded in his mountain workshop, and Leo and Doc stole those Fender circuits almost verbatim from the RCA tube manual. It really does a good job of explaining the basic layout and differences in amplifiers, along with saftey in working with tubes. That teamed with the other books I read really gives me the confidence to dive in now. The chassis I have has been drilled and some components mounted.
