Flamed Macassar Ebony!

Recommended Posts

OK so my fave wood guy shoots me an email about a new load of Mac ebony that just came in, and I know that probably 50 other guys are getting the same email. I wrap up early from work and head over there. I get there 4:15pm and he says only 2 other guys have picked through the pile, cool.

I wipe down and sort through 30+ boards, and find 3 that are flamed!! :D I'm an ebony junky and I've done this at least a dozen times over the last few years and have never ever seen flamed Mac ebony before, the only example of it I've seen is Carl Thompson's "$10 Million Bass" (http://www.ctbasses.com/ then click on "Pictures"). Now my fabulous wife is going to wrap it and put under the tree! :D

I've got one 4"x60" perfectly quartered and two 7"x38" flatsawn, all 4/4 all from the same billet. One of the shorter ones is already destined for the top on my next bass.

What do you think I should do with the rest? I'm thinking acoustic back & sides, do you think I can get more than one set out of 4/4 stock?

Other ideas...??

I'll try & get some pics up later this weekend.

Please do! Sounds like an amazing find! I'd definitely go for acoustic back/side sets myself. You should be able to get 4 slices out of 4/4 stock with a good resaw/resawer, and/or do a 4-piece back with the longer board.

Time to do some serious thinking/layout, but otherwise I'd just leave it where it is, in board form, until you're sure what you want to do with the stuff.
