Daniel Sorbera
You have one week starting now to make a cigar box guitar. Entrys end on the 19th at 12:00 PM central time the rules It has to produce an acoustic sound. (It can have an electric pickup also) It must be playable It must be a stringed instrement (It can have any number of strings made out of material (you can make it a uke or mandolin or whatever) It must have frets (they don't have to be made out of metal) It doesn't have to be made out of a cigar box, or even shaped like a cigar box. It can be any shape or size you like, and made out of any material you wan't. Thats about it. The rest is up to you. Let the building commence! M_A_T_T
Any shape or size? I saved the shell halves of a coconut I had for the perpose of one day making a funny little stringed instrument out of them. Is that okay? Quote Link to comment
Daniel Sorbera
Absalutly. It doesn't have to be made out of wood. Quote Link to comment
M_A_T_T
One week, eh? I'll see if I can squeeze it in between violin #2. Quote Link to comment

psw
I can't participate unfortunately as I'm not able to do any building or tinkering at the moment... But here's one for inspirtation... Built from surplus 3mm MDF the Jarrah (floor board scraps) neck bolts to the top. It's tuned from the rear with six machine bolts, a hole drilled through and screwed into some internal hardwood. The frets are coathanger wire and it's scaled to play in A. The strain is taken by an internal block below the top but not attached, hence the offset sound hole which also maximizing the vibrating area of the soundboard. The dampened MDF virtually curved itself around a rough chipboard shape. It has a black stain to show off, on close inspection, the coverted burl grain of the MDF! The design is such that the back curve sits on the right thigh and is small enough to plink away at the traffic lights... Total cost...6 screws and an afternoon to complete!!! Even the strings were free...the idea is that it recycles my acoustics strings...reversed and cut short all the fret wear is removed from the fretting area... Have fun...think laterally... I wonder if a whammy could fit on a cigar box. if any one has done cigarbox guitar, post some pics, i need some insperado There's a few on my site... http://home.hiwaay.net/~jehle/photos5.htm http://home.hiwaay.net/~jehle/photos6.htm Quote Link to comment
Jehle
I would also suggest a closer look at Hitone's CB Uke this month. Notice how the pattern has been cut out to make the sound hole. It's so well done, I missed that at first glance. Nice touch! Quote Link to comment
Nitefly SA
the only specifiction is that it has to have frets, right? can be a cigar box uke? does it have to be acoustic, if i were to make an electric i would still be in right? thanks Quote Link to comment
Marzocchi705
This is what i like to see! A compitition on a time limit! This will be realy fun to watch. If i had a cigar box lying around i would give it a go, but i dont, so i cant. Next time. Quote Link to comment
Nitefly SA
doesnt have to be made of a cigar box, needs frets/strings, thats it. now get started! Quote Link to comment
Jehle
Yep, even an old shoebox would do the trick. Go ahead, be creative. Start looking around the house for an old box. Slap on a stick for the neck and string 'er up. I have this funny feeling about next months GOTM. Oh, and do they have to be playable? You never mentioned that. Quote Link to comment
Daniel Sorbera
Okay a quick clarification of the rules. It has to produce an acoustic sound. (It can have an electric pickup also) It must be playable It can have any number of strings made out of material (you can make it a uke or mandolin or whatever) and all the other rules from my first post. x189player
All right, I'm in too! I just spent an hour on the porch whittling a neck, surprising how much fun! Quote Link to comment
Marzocchi705
Shoe box you say, well, i did just buy a pair of shoes. and i have old dead strings i just pulled of my paul. Hmm, i have an idea! now. to find wood for a neck... hehe. i have that too! Ok, count me in. at worst i make half a guitar. This WILL be fun! Quote Link to comment
Jehle
Just one more question Godin. When we are done, where should we post the pictures of the finished CBG? Here? Or, should we make a mock GOTM thread with just CBGs? I'm actually tempted for you to start a mock GOTM thread, not knocking the real thing, I just have that kind of sense of humour. Complete with preamble, four picture limit and such. Quote Link to comment
Daniel Sorbera
Your wish is my command . Here is the link. I'm almost done with mine. It will be done tuesday at the latest. All I have to do is fret the neck, rout the neck pocket, finish the bridge, and finish the tailpeice Edited January 16, 2006 by Godin SD Quote Link to comment
