JOBeirne
I'm building a Jem like guitar: Would I see better resonance in the wood if I left the handle out? Thanks!
Stickmangumby
IMHO, in theory cutting a monkey grip into your guitar will 'damage' the guitars tone and resonance, but in practise it's not noticeably bad. It may make it sound different (but all guitars sound different), but it won't make it sound crap. Cut a monkey grip if you're going to use it or you like the look of it, leave it out if you don't care. TeiscosRock
A JEM aint a JEM without the monkey grip
american_jesus
you'd just be making an RG with a vine inlay...
signguy
IMO the monkey grip would change the sound so little, it would be inaudible. Could be wrong, but the farther away from the strings path, and vibrations from neck to bridge you go, the less difference a hole would make in resonance, sustain etc. Besides they do look way kewl.. lol
unusual71
IMO they look awful, but these guys are right, the sound would be so negligable pick to do it on taste, functionality and look, not sound.

Mattia
I really doubt you'd be able to pick one from the other in a double blind test while playing it through a hi-gain amp.
