My Hybrid

Recommended Posts

I started this in the last century when a storm knocked an old alder tree in my friends field. I don't like copying so I designed a body which ain't too pretty but I like it. :D

I bought the neck on eBay, it came from a Jay Turser guitar. It feels quite nice and I prefer rosewood to maple boards.

Here are some photos from my workbench (i.e: the kitchen table!). Don't be too critical or it might never get finished!

PIC DELETED

I suggest you reformat the pic, it is too big per forum rules!

And I suggest you keep your personal political philosiphies to youreslf or you WILL be banned.

Yep, I agree, the shape is weird but it'll be mine and I don't think anyone will ever copy it!

Working with a mallet and a set of wood-chisels is very slow but extremely satisfying. I have a photo of the slab of alder somewhere, I must root it out.

I'm an artist/illustrator in 'real life' so I suppose it's a form of art!

I gotta say, man, that body shape is freakin me out.... :D

Seriously, though, you're doing a really nice job with it. It's cool how you actually harvested the lumber yourself, too. That said, how long did you dry it before building with it? I just hope that it won't warp or crack after you've put so much hard work into it.

Anyway, keep updating, and we'll keep reading. :D

Well, the tree fell about 1990. The owner of the land is actually a fine bass-player himself and he had a few nice slabs cut from the tree. It has been drying since so I assume it's okay.

Here's another couple of days work.....

PIC DELETED

22: Drilling the holes for two volume and two tone pots.

23: Going deeper into the controls cavity. I have to be extra careful here that I don't 'meet' the back pick-up cavity and that I leave enough depth to take the posts for the stop-bar and the bridge.

24. I hope to make a cover from some mahogony veneer so it's easier to cut a "false top" in the shape of a semi-circle and it should look pretty.

26a: After carving the channel between the pick-up cavities, I cut a diamond shape where I will inlay some mahogony veneer.

Lots of work to do yet......whew!

Same here! I undestand getting 4 pics together in one file to abide by the rules, but the size is too big

Very nice work considering that you use hand tools rather power tools... Very inspiring... I just can't wait to see it being finished. Btw, what sort of finish do you had in mind? or is it too early in its stages?

It's sad how the smell of "authority" goes to some moderators heads on internet forums such as this.

My images which were removed by maiden69 were 123.4K and 127.6K in size, yet on another active thread in this category, there are two images which are 208.8K and 161.1K in size...and they have not been removed?

maiden69...how exactly do you measure the size of images on this forum? I would like to know that as I am sure would others. And where are those rules to which you refer? I work with graphics every day and I can tell you that the images which you haven't removed are 118.9K bigger than my images! They were also hosted on my own server, not on the server of this forum...so, it would be interesting to hear your logic in this.

I don't have time for this bureacracy so... thanks to you guys who expressed an interest and posted comments but I think you can count this thread as "dead by moderator assassination"!

Rules are in the Announcements and Test Area.

Your image was 800 pixels by 545 pixels. The picture posting rules limit pics to 640x480 max, as that is easier for mods to judge than image file size. That's why it got changed to a link. It's not about using up the forum's bandwidth, but so that the site remains 56k dial-up friendly.

Think you need to take a chill pill, and don't stop posting just because of this, that would be a shame.

I'm sorry, pixel width and height has no bearing on slowing down a download on a 56K dial-up modem, it's the actual size of the image in KB that matters. Moderators should know that. My images download quicker than the two I referred to so if the reason for deleting them is based on download speed, it's simply wrong....period.

No chill pills here I'm afraid, just good directions to another forum where moderators understand about file sizes.

If the pic is bigger than 640x480, it causes some people to have to scroll side to side to see the whole thing. PITA. But when it comes right down to it, it doesn't matter why. I'm not trying to be rude, but that's the rule. If the moderators miss something that's in violation of the rules, you can always be a good citizen and report it by clicking that little button at the bottom of each post.

Posting Of Pictures:

- ALL pics are to be no more than 640x480 pixels.

- ONE PIC PER POST., except in the Tutorial sections, where you are allowed up to 10 pics per post.

- All subsequent (following) pics in a post are to be linked. DO NOT USE THE "IMG" TAG for pics 2, 3, 4, 5, etc.

- DO NOT HOT-LINK TO PICS NOT OWNED BY YOU AND ON YOUR OWN SERVER. Use the URL tag instead to provide a link to the pic.

- ABSOLUTELY NO PORNOGRAPHIC MATERIAL IS TO BE POSTED. Posting of such will result in an IMMEDIATE ban from the site. "Guitar porn" excluded. :-)

- When quoting a post with a pic in it, CHANGE THE 'IMG' TAG TO A LINK, or remove it from your post.

- Keep the pics on topic in each thread.

I think it might've been social commentary on the...erm... overzealous moderation in this forum.

While I'm not sure I'd call Maiden69 a nazi-- I mean, if he's a nazi, then what's Rhoads56?-- but Francisk did make an excellent point about file size vs. picture size, and perhaps the modersators should take heed rather than just dismissing it as another case of "Brian's forum, Brian's rules". Just because it's against the status quo doesn't make it a bad idea, y'know. :D

Instead of wasting a lot of time writing out the rant going on in my head, I'll just say that there are forums out there that are much more strict than this one. There are forums that are not. If someone can't/won't fit in here, they can always find another place.

No malice, just opinion. :D

In no way was maiden "abusing" his role as mod. In fact, I think he did his job in an extremely polite manner. If you can’t bother to read the rules than that is your problem, throwing a tantrum and running away from the forum IMO = good riddance, we don’t need your drama.

Is it REALLY that hard to say "I’m sorry, I will read the rules on pic posting and correct MY mistake." In this case, I guess so!

You'd have to be running in abut 640x480 desktop resolution to have to go out of your way (i.e. scrolling side to side/up and down) to see the entire image. And I haven't heard of anyone using that resolution in about 8-10 years now :D

Uhhh, but what is with the guitar images? I have a guy dressed up as a nazi pop up when I click on any of them. I am REALLY interested in seeing first timers work, especially artists work.
