smileynumber13
I'll vouch for Ibanez, I bought a GRX as my first guitar and it was actually pretty nice (I think they are called GRG's now, *shrug*) Anyway, it's all up to how you want it to feel in your hands, so +1 to whoever said try as many as you can out first. Jalien21
i got a cheap fender showmaster for 300ish dollars. it's a nice guitar, sounds pretty okay most of the time. it's comfortable and well-made. i would recommend it. i really think you have to go down to the store to feel stuff out, though. Ben
If you live in the UK then I recomend this company: http://www.jhs.co.uk/vintageelectric.html The LPs (the v100 ones with mahogany bodies and set necks, not the cheaper bolt ons) are really good copies for the price. Great fretwork, great pickups and hardware and pretty cheap. That site is the companies site, so the prices are RRPs. The real prices are much lower. Read the reviews on harmony central. I've tried 3 of the models on that page (LP, jackson type one, and one of the pacifica type ones at the bottom), and all three had really good fretjobs and low action. The LP sounded best IMHO. rokeros
IMHO my choice of a first guitar would also be a guitar I would cherish and my favourite even after owning 6 instruments is "Rinton Music" located in Thailand. http://www.guitarandpickup.com I know many people who had and still to this present day own at least 1 of these gorgeous axes and no matter whether you're a beginner or a professional studio recorder, a rinton will chances are still bring a smile to your face. However, if you assume its a bit far, then I recommend getting a Xaviere.

rokeros
I'd rather have a real Zemaitis before i'd jump to a xaviere. And btw, crafty: "Those guitars are absolute garbage. 'Nuff said." What do you know about them? Sure they have crap english, but yet don't judge the company by its cover/website. Besides, their tops are from US anyways(dissing ur own country ). They make almost as nice stuff as PRS and are not to be considered as a cheap replica manufacturer, each worker is talented and you won't see any CNC's in this place, and for around 600 US I think its a steal. Check this link out to see whether its junk... http://www.guitarandpickup.com/index.php?l...d=77139&Ntype=4 Don't tell me that this is "absolute garbage" right:? crafty
I'd have to ask the same thing, rokeros. What do YOU know about them? From what I see from their pictures of finished guitars, they look like PRS's fitted with different pickups. If you really believe that you can give them $600 and get the same quality as a PRS or Gibson, I'd suggest you go read up on P.T. Barnum. Also, I don't think I'm "dissing" on my own country when I say that cheap Asian copies of otherwise quality guitars are garbage.
rokeros
I only recommended the brand cos I have several friends wielding those axes. And I didn't say its as good, but close to the PRS richness and lp/strat typa sound. If you look at the link of the production, then you'll know that the guitars are all handmade. lol...I think you need to do the same thing the other members told me to do this week...."calm down"! smileynumber13
Hahahahahaha I want a guitar called Uranus. Or Snail... No but really they don't look to bad. I like the "Warrior 5" in transparent green... (I'm a sucker for green + LP shape..) I just picked up what I'm pretty sure is a cheap Asian LP copy... (Aria Guitars) ... cheaper than these... and honestly, I was pretty suprised that it sounded and played how it did. So you wouldn't be too bad off, it's a pretty nice guitar, and used I paid $70. Unfortunately though, something's wrong with the finish along the fretboard. Hence, why I got it to begin with (experiment time!) Again just play a bunch. You'll find one. Dan Salter
my two penneth... Since i saw the link for these asian guitars yesterday i have been pouring over the site....That green les paul is stunning...soooo much so its now my desktop background and also "I must build a green top les paul" is on the list. Im a real "vintage/trad" kinda guy....Gibson, fender, les pauls, strats, and teles....and other gibbos....im not a fan of the PRS brigade....but ...some of the guitars on that asian site look amazing...and ok so its off from tradition but that green trans, blue trans looks so sweet on the les paul body shape...with the zebra pick ups.. My view...Sure...they are asian....but you can see from the pics they are made well....and my view on cheaper guitars....if they are made of the correct timbers....real maple caps and not veneer etc....then with our "knowledge" and "skills" ( im talking all us budding luthiers) we have the ability to make pretty much any guitar play well, stay in tune and maybe with new pick ups have killer tone. For $600 ( about £350) i would have one of these guitars....full set up, fret dress, replace pick ups...and for £500 you would have a killer guitar...back up, or something that just looks amazingly COOL for that song or 2 !! we should all by now with our luthier skills be able to pick up say a Squier or jap fender and make it play as well as a US built guitar? ( maybe a debateable example but you get what i mean) or an epiphone to hold up well against a gibbo?. saying all that....a while ago i very nearly plumped for an xaviere shell top zemaitis style ( Tony came from my neck of the woods as did Sid Poole )...but they seemed too good to be true?...and the headstock looked a bit "cheap"...but again i was happy to spend a couple of hundred quid (pounds) on it...but are they really that bad? anyone played one? is it just bad set up and fretwork? ...are these so called GFS pick ups as good as the hype or terrible?.... and the person that mentioned the Aria...i have a 76 aria pro les paul custom....as a spare/back up for my gibbos...and it handles very well...!.. rokeros
THe pacifica 312 in trans green. I have it, and kick any 112, but to be frank, any pacifica crushes the standard beginner's strat. Dont' believe me? Then check out these clips with a pacifica 112! Yer, the guys at Tech21 appartently love it. Not bothered to link all trax though... http://www.tech21nyc.com/sounds/TM10.mp3 http://www.tech21nyc.com/sounds/gt2_sounds/gt2cali.mp3 http://www.tech21nyc.com/sounds/gt2_sounds/Gt2brit.mp3 http://www.tech21nyc.com/sounds/gt2_sounds/gt2tweed.mp3 http://www.tech21nyc.com/sounds/triac_sounds/TRIAC-Blues.mp3 http://www.tech21nyc.com/sounds/triac_sounds/TRIAC-Rock.mp3 Edited June 3, 2006 by rokeros
Pr3Va1L
Yeah, I would highly recommend a pacifica... I had the luck of having a weird rare (but damn grat) floyd equipped guitar as my first... But since my brother played guitar as well, we had a PAC-112X too... Sold it since then, but it was a really nice guitar actually... Sounded real good, too. 3 piece alder body with a trans finish as far as I remember...
palecriminal
I got a Squier Bullet at the pawnshop as a fill-in guitar after my car was stolen with all of my equipment in it. It hella sux. Avoid these like the plague. I heard someone once advise beginners to get a good quality guitar to start out with. Then, if playing doesn't work out (losing interest, etc.) at least there'll be some resale value to it. If you have to go cheap, there are squier strats floating around pawnshops all over the country for around a hunndred bucks. They ain't great, but they're not bad for that kind of money. Nicko_Lps
I bought an Epiphone LP Slash cause it was looking good, but if you wanna change a bit later the sound and buy some real electronics they are awsome for a long time after the begginer level. Cheers!
krampus
Is the Fender Squire a good choice? well yes, I personally start with squire, and is still under construction...change the body and stuff. but i dont have much time to do that now because of my finals exams ... killemall8
i wouldnt go near a squier or any other kind of fender. ever. i hate them so much!!!! die!! + however many for rondo music. i bought the explorer style guitar with the set neck for 160. where else can you find one like that? that was the best guitar i ever owned. yup... westhemann
I bought a rondo swamp ash lp a while back.It is the biggest piece of wasted wood I have ever seen in my life in my educated opinion. the fingerboard seperated a bit about a month after I got it,so I took the fretboard off and found the problem...they glue the fingerboard on by routing two small depressions along the length of the board, then filling that with poly glue...so most of the fretboard has no glue at all.. plus the expected cheap as it gets hardware and electronics, along with the softest fretwire you can buy ,and the most godawful wood selection on the planet...pretty much comes together to complete the turd. stay away from them I say.... Mikester
I own an agile 2000. It would make a very good beginning guitar.
Digideus
Anything in the cheaper end of the Dean Gutars range is a good investment for a beginner. Even their mid priced ones are cheaper than most and are extremely playable.
marksound
Pretty much all of the low end guitars are made in the same Asian factories as all the rest of the low end guitars. That aside, the best beginner guitar is the one the beginner likes and feels comfortable with. A good setup (and a good teacher) are more important than which guitar.
