screwdelulu Posted April 26, 2006 Report Posted April 26, 2006 I'm in the beggining of a new project - 12 string neckthru. The neck will consist of: Padauk - Maple - Ipe - Maple - Padauk here's a little mock-up Is it advisible to make the blank twice as thick (5 cm instead of 2.5), then split it, so i'll have another neckthru blank for future project? Am i risking in two bowed neck blanks due to the inner wood stresses? Sorry about my bad english, hope you understand what i'm trying to say... Quote

It's common enough to saw two acoustic necks out of a larger glued-up blank. If your wood's seasoned, you're good. Quote
fryovanni Posted April 26, 2006 Report Posted April 26, 2006 If you want two necks made with the same Laminates go for it. I am assuming you meant to say 5 inches v.s. 2.5". Assuming you are going to cut the headstock w/ no scarf joint. You can probably even go a bit less than 5" for two if you take the headstocks from opposite ends. As far as risk of bowing. Not real likely using those woods laminated in such a way. Peace,Rich Quote
screwdelulu Posted April 27, 2006 Author Report Posted April 27, 2006 the neck thru design i'm talking about is a bit different. there's a center piece (the laminated woods) which is just half the thickness of the body (which will be enough for the neck) and abother piece will be glued to the buttom, so it's 4.5cm total. thanks for you comments guys Quote
