Splitting Neck Blank

Recommended Posts

I'm in the beggining of a new project - 12 string neckthru.

The neck will consist of:

Padauk - Maple - Ipe - Maple - Padauk

here's a little mock-up

Is it advisible to make the blank twice as thick (5 cm instead of 2.5), then split it, so i'll have another neckthru blank for future project?

Am i risking in two bowed neck blanks due to the inner wood stresses?

Sorry about my bad english, hope you understand what i'm trying to say...

Um, you want a 1" thick blank for a neck-through? Huh?

It's common enough to saw two acoustic necks out of a larger glued-up blank. If your wood's seasoned, you're good.

If you want two necks made with the same Laminates go for it. I am assuming you meant to say 5 inches v.s. 2.5". Assuming you are going to cut the headstock w/ no scarf joint. You can probably even go a bit less than 5" for two if you take the headstocks from opposite ends. As far as risk of bowing. Not real likely using those woods laminated in such a way.
