I want to do a sring through body construction on my next guitar. but I saw different systems... one with a straight TOM, one with an angled one, one with the top ferrules in line, one different. what's the story? is it imporntant? are there differences?

Is it important? Yes. Does it have to be dead on? No.

you want to keep about a 10 degree angle (like a stop tailpiece would have) but it doesn't have to be exact, just can't go too shallow or too steep of an angle. If you know the finished height of the TOM (or damn close) you can then measure how far back to place your top ferrules. Then choose your pattern .*.*.* or ...*** or whatever.
