Hello everyone,

I'm new to this board, although i'm reading it for a few months.

I have an old Ibanez rg170 that i'm planning to give an upgrade, brigde tuners etc.

One idea i had is replacing the body(agathis) with the one from a rg550/570. The rg170 has got a non-AANJ neck, so i wil need a non-AANJ 550 body. But will a 170-neck fit a 550 body at all or are there any things i'm overlooking?

thnx in advance

I see a couple problems with what you want to do. The biggest one is that the 550 has a better neck than the 170, so why replace it? A bigger upgrade would probably be to put a 550 neck on your 170.

Because the 170's body is made of agathis, not that great and my ibanez 520 neck isn't that much different from my 170. Byut it does has a body made of better wood :D

Well, the real question is whether you like the 170...whether it's made of agathis or plywood or honduran magohany, isn't that essential. If the guitar works for you, then why change it?

Perhaps you're thinking that a different wood is going to perform some kind of magical transformation on the guitar...but that's pretty unlikely. Sure, the wood may have a little to do with the sound, but most of an electric guitar's tone comes from the pickups and the amp.

More likely is you'll have some real hassles getting everything to fit properly...because guitar parts aren't as interchangeable as you'd think...everything always just a little bit off...

If you really want to change body --then consider making your own. You've got the existing body to use a template --and that's really 90 percent of the work.
