aj82 Posted September 11, 2003 Report Posted September 11, 2003 I'm looking at making my first guitar and while i have learnt a great deal from this site already, i am still unsure as to what wood i should be using and what pickup will give the best results. I want a guitar that's going to rock and rock hard (i am only a young buck after all) and be able to produce a crisp, clear sound. I am planining on using mahogony for the body and neck but as for the fret board i'm not to sure and when it comes to pick ups i have absolutely no idea. If anyone has any suggestions that may help it would be appreciated. Quote
krazyderek Posted September 11, 2003 Report Posted September 11, 2003 sounds like your on the right track, mahogany can be a good starting point. if you want a rock sound and you don't want to have to get a crazy expensive amp, i would suggest just going it with some emg's either 81, 85 or 89... fingerboards.... well, preference, you should try reading up on some wood descriptions on sites, but indian rosewood is most commonly the fingerboard wood used on mahogany necks. what kind of design and specs did you have in mind? Roli Posted September 11, 2003 Report Posted September 11, 2003 Ebony fingerboard, H,S,S or H,S,H pickups mounted on pickguard will surely do the job. Quote
Jehle Posted September 11, 2003 Report Posted September 11, 2003 Ebony fingerboard, H,S,S or H,S,H pickups mounted on pickguard will surely do the job. Using a pickguard also means that you don't have to be really careful cutting out for the pickups and controls. The scratchplate will cover it all up. Quote
westhemann Posted September 11, 2003 Report Posted September 11, 2003 if you want a heavy sound you might not like a pickgaurd.i find you get a better heavy tone from metal mounting rings. Quote
westhemann Posted September 11, 2003 Report Posted September 11, 2003 by the way derek is right on about the pickups,if you want a chunky bottom heavy sound i would go with an 85 at both neck and bridge,if you want a crisper, slightly less bottom heavy tone with a more percussive palm mute put an 81 at the bridge and an 85 at the neck. if you want passive pickups, try a duncan jb at the bridge and maybe a custom or a 59 at the neck.
