Stiffy Posted June 22, 2006 Report Posted June 22, 2006 Which would would work better as a metalize option for classic humbuckers 1 or 2 meg volume pots with just 500k tone pots? Quote
Daniel Sorbera Posted June 22, 2006 Report Posted June 22, 2006 metalize option Putting on 1 meg or 2 meg pots will -not- make your low PAF output humbuckers anywhere near "metal" or high output. Basicly it will make it brighter will a small, if any, output boost. Quote

Daniel Sorbera Posted June 23, 2006 Report Posted June 23, 2006 Try hooking up your vintage output humbucker directly to the output jack. Thats as close to zero resistence as you will get What a surprize it makes almost no diffrence! Everything that article says is true. But the raise in gain is only a very small ammount. Quote
crafty Posted June 23, 2006 Report Posted June 23, 2006 Actually, Godin, you're forgetting about Kirchoff's Law. The volume control circuit acts as a voltage divider network, which without going into all sorts of physics I learned in vo-tech but forgot somewhere in law school, adding a larger value pot will actually have the effect of increasing the output. Problem is it also screws with the resonant peak and the sound can become shrill and ice-picky. I wouldn't say Torres is exactly lying, but the difference between a 1-meg and 2-meg pot isn't going to be as dramatic as a 500k to 1M pot. This is why Fender uses 1-meg pots on the Noiseless pickups. Quote

Stiffy Posted June 23, 2006 Author Report Posted June 23, 2006 I'd stick with 500k or 1M on that pot. Ok thanx for the tip. I'll let you know if the 1 meg increases the metal. Quote
has-sound Posted June 24, 2006 Report Posted June 24, 2006 (edited) 2 Meg pots are very harsh sounding unless you are using uber high output pups. 1 Meg really only sounds good with pups over 10 or 11k. They add more presence than anything else along with a slight increase in output. The extra presence gives the illusion of higher output... -Stan Edited June 24, 2006 by has-sound Quote
