Dr. Rhubarb
Hi, i'm repairing my custom strat's hideous wiring job, but I don't know how to determine whether the pup's are currently wired in or out of phase. None of the pups are marked in any way (they look like standard strat single coils), so I can't check manufacturer color codes. Any ideas? Jehle
You need a voltmeter to check the phase. Here's the trick: 1) Connect the two wires of pickup to the two probes of the pickup. Aligator clips are great for this. 2) Tap the magnets of the pickup with a screwdriver, or keys. Watch the voltmeter when you tap them. 3) If there is a positive jump in the voltage (needle moves up), you are in phase. If there is a negative jump in the voltage, it's out of phase. 4) Write it down! Works everytime for passive picups. Hope that helps.
