martin koch or melvyn hiscock?

Recommended Posts

I am looking to start building my first guitar soon and i dont know which book to buy to give me the best advice. I am looking to build a strat replica just to start off with. It will hopefully be a stevie ray vaughan tribute. ie left handed trem on a right handed guitar, texas specials and SRV inlayed on the 12th fret.

the tutorials on this site would almost be enough to tell you how to build a guitar anyway but i want a good book for more advice and references as the more knowledge i have b4 i start the better!

Ps the tutorial on removing a fretboard by Kevan Geier is excellent. it did take me about 1.5 hours to get a rosewood fb off an old rockwwod strat copy but it did a great job! I am using the neck on my first guitar but am puttin on an ebony fb. The neck is flatsawn so i may replace it later but its still very straight after about 7 yrs of lying about.

I have the Hiscock book, but I don't have the other one, so I'm not gonna say which one you should buy. I think you can learn alot from both of them. Hiscock book is great to get started with if you want the in's and out's of guitar building. The only thing is don't look for specific details and exact measurements for everything he does, it's more of a guideline that will help you design your guitar. That being said, it's a really good book and I did learn alot from it. I think I'll order that Koch book next week, you can always stand to learn more... lol.. but as far as which is better.. I don't know at them moment and I'm sure that there is some memeber who can give you the pro's and con's of each book. I don't see how you could go wrong with either one myself.

I have both books. If I had to keep one and give up the other, I would keep the Kotch book. It seems to provide a bit more technical details but either book is good to have. I think having both would be a great thing for a beginner. I know they helped me quite a bit when I wasn't quite sure about something. Having two sources helps when you're nervous about doing something and two sources show a different view on it (both pictures and approach) really helps.

Anyway, I would get the Kotch book first then get the other. Good luck.

I have both books. Both are great. If I had to get only one I would get Martin Koch's book. He has more detail covering pickups and hardware. You can also buy it as an E-book on the web and print it like I did which is far more convenient than waiting for a bookseller to order it or get it by post.
