ROCKETROB
Well this is something that may seem simple to some but has me a bit confused. I'm on my third build, an ash bodied double cut away tele with black binding, butterscotch finish and standard tele style pickups. I know I have to fill the grain before finishing, but do I put the binding on first? Or fill first? The binding channel is routed already and the body is well sanded. My first build had binding and alder body that turned out well, but did not need to be grain filled. Your thoughts please. Rob.
rhoads56
grain filling is part of the finishing schedule. binding is part of the construction.
ROCKETROB
yes, that makes sense. I was just thinking about cleaning/sanding the grain filler off of the binding. Should I tape it off to protect the binding? Rob.
rhoads56
no, just pretend the binding is wood, and sand it like normal
ROCKETROB
Thanks for the help. I'll try to get the fill done this week and let you know how it turned out. Rob.
Desopolis
I have seen people tape it, or they scrape the finish off the binding before clear coating.
rhoads56
just fill and sand. dont bother with tape unless you want to waste time. the binding is plastic, the filler will not go into it.
Desopolis
true about the filler, but I was also thinking about the stain/finish.
rhoads56
lets just stick to supplying answers to the questions asked, before we get ahead of ourselves and confuse everyone. What do ya reckon?
