JJ Rodriguez
Any good tutorials on carving a volute anywheres? Did a search but it didn't pull anything up.
low end fuzz
use a belt sander
Setch
Or a rasp and cabinet shaper. A belt sander is faster, but dustier and it's much easier to take away too much too quickly.
Bizzar_Guitars
I agree with low end fuzz on this one. Check this out: http://www.hoffmanguitars.com/MAKING%20NECK7.htm Ciao, Garth
JJ Rodriguez
Is there any detailed explanation? I'm a noob, and I really love the feel of a volute, but fear it may be something a bit too complicated for my first guitar, since there's no real template you can make to route it or anything. Are they difficult to carve at all for someone with no woodworking experience? I plan on getting a bunch of cheap blanks and testing shaping my ideas on them before I mess up anything too expensive. Jon
The belt sander method looks pretty self explanatory. I certainly believe I can take on this task with my belt sander, so thanks for the link! I understand that not following a template can make you feel lost. Just take your time with the belt sander, or any hand tool and have a picture nearby for comparison, or even another guitar with a volute. Prostheta
I use an oscillating spindle sander with the neck turned on it's side to shape the neck up to the volute and from the volute "peak" into the headstock. From there I just round it in from the edges either side of where the nut would be. I guess you have to try it using some scrap to get an idea of how you do it. It's actually really fun, and not daunting in the slightest!
