al heeley
I've nearly completed my walnut prs-alike with the wilkinson wraparound bridge, the neck and the nut need some adjustment, but I strung it up for a preliminary action check and the top e sings with that annoying metallic sitar buzz, the other strings seem ok. I'm guessing the bridge is to blame as the string angle over the top surface before wrapping round the back is actually quite shallow and there's plenty of chance for the string to vibrate in the shallow long channel. I wondered if there was anyone else had this experience with this type of bridge, and if there is a way of curing it. For me it will be back to T-O-M stlye and hardtail strat bridges from now on. At least these give a good, sharp string angle.
Mr Alex
Do you only get that buzz when you don't fret the high e? If so, sounds to me like your nut slot angles down toward the first fret slightly, if you understand what I'm saying. you want the leading edge of the nut to be in contact with the string, if the leading edge dips down a little you can get the string vibrating INSIDE the nut. Only other reason I can think of is that the bridge is angled forward, and is acting like one of those buzz bridges, but I would THINK that would effect the other strings too. BTW I used that bridge on my last build, and apart from the crap plating, and the fact it's aluminium(not my idea of a good sounding bridge), its not too bad. Certainly didn't buzz for me. al heeley
Well I have to file the nut slots anyway so I'll make sure to put a backward slope on them, but it seems like I need to try and get a bit of a backward slope going on the bridge studs too, maybe that will help reduce the vibration in the channel.
