fenderbender06
Hello again, I had a post a few days ago talking about a fret buzz problem. So I did the steps people and the tutural section told me to do. My neck is really flat, only a little bow now, but its doable considering my hard strumming. I still get fret buzz when i "ramp" on the high e past the 12th fret. BUT-I have found that the nut I replced is too high. Each string allows for at least .012 on my feeler gague, thats supposed to be .005 right? What are my option? remove the strings and file down the nut slots or can I take the whole nut out and file the bottom?? It seems filing the slot would be best but the files are not cheap......any suggestion?

It seems filing the slot would be best but the files are not cheap......any suggestion? The first question would be.. Are the string slots cut correctly to match the radius? If they are all equal in distance from the frets(match the radius). Then it would be good to sand the bottom of the nut. Just be extra careful to take it slow and keep it even. To answer the .005" clearance question. Yes, that is good. Just keep in mind how small that number is when you sand. It would be easy to sand too far(take your time. After you re-install be sure to double check all your clearances. As far as relief. I shoot for 0(flat) to .010 depending, and most of the time I am closer to .008". I set that at the 7th fret on my acoustics 8th fret on my electrics(depending on were the neck and body join I may go to 9th). Be sure you check that with your strings tuned. Then I set my intonation. Saddle action of course is to your liking. I generally increase the clearance starting from the high E by about .005" per string( I like- my electrics around .072", .067", .062", .057", .052", 0.047" if you have a heavy hand or light touch +/-.015" or so). Take you time. A great set up is worth the effort Rich P.S. There was a topic in the tool section about nut slotting tools(less expensive alternatives). A torch tip cleaner set(can be purchased at home depot for $3) is a group of small gauged files that can work just fine for limited nut slotting. If you did more than a few a year it may be worth investing in files. This might be a solution if buget is an issue.
