arling777 Posted December 15, 2006 Report Posted December 15, 2006 Out of necessity, my build plan has switched from a direct copy of one of my other guitars to a seven string. Fortunately I haven't bought anything yet. I need to get this done asap so i'll probably just buy everything as basic as possible. Since I need this soon whats the easiest(not alot of steps, doesnt require alot of technique)/quickest finish I can do??? BTW, I just joined the winter drumline (dont get fooled by the name we're playing alot of metal and no marching band music) at my school. Jaws of Life by John Petrucci is basically the entire reason i'll be going through with this. I also need to do a tung-oil finish on a neck/headstock of a kit im doing in a week or two. Brands? Tutorials? Thanks Quote
Mattia Posted December 15, 2006 Report Posted December 15, 2006 Oil finish. Fine sand everything, get some TruOil or Danish Oil, or MiniWax wipe-on somethinorother (not pure tung oil, not ever), wipe on with old T-shirt, let soak in, wipe off, repeat 3-6 times, rub down entire thing with fine steel wool, add paste wax (carnuba/beeswax something, NO SILICONES ALLOWED, so not pledge or some such furniture nonsense), let sit, buff out to a matte shine with old t-shirt (clean one, this time). Very organic, natural look, not high gloss, but it's the easiest finish I know of (hard to really screw up), it's pretty quick, and gives you a nice satin finished look. Quote
arling777 Posted December 15, 2006 Author Report Posted December 15, 2006 is Formby's a legitamate tung oil to use, it's the only one i found at the local harware store and the paint shop. Quote
ooten2 Posted December 16, 2006 Report Posted December 16, 2006 I've used Formby's tung oil on necks with great success. Quote
