Hey I just got a KFK EMG set of an 81 and 85 with the PA2 20db gain booster. I'm wanting a diagram for

EMG 81 & 85 and middle single coil *happens to be an Ibanez s1*

1 volume and 1 tone

PA2 gain booster connected to all 3 pickups (or if that's not possible just the bridge humbucker)

5 way switch with positions as follows: 1) Bridge Humbucker

2) Bridge Humbucker & Middle Single coil

3) Bridge Humbucker & Neck Humbucker

4) Neck Humbucker & Middle Single coil

5) Neck Humbucker

::NONE OF THESE COIL TAPPED:: the whole humbucker and the single at the same time!

***OR***

1) Bridge Humbucker

2) Middle single coil

3) Neck Humbucker

4) Bridge & Neck Humbucker

5) All 3 pickups

If anyone knows of a diagram of this sort, PLEASE let me know of it. I can't imagine what I'm wanting being so different that no one else has ever had it done..... but from searching all the logical places for wiring diagrams, it sure seems to be.

Thanks,

Anthony

First of all: Are the Ibanez single coil a passive high impedance pickup? If so, forget about it. You cannot mix active and passive pickups without a special circuitry to match impedances and so on.

Next: The first scheme (pos 1 bridge HB, 2, bridge and middle and so on) is very standard. It can be done 8if I’m not miss-remembering things here) with a standard Strat style switch. I’ll might have to draw it up to be sure…

For other interesting alternatives, check out guitarnuts. http://www.guitarnuts.com/wiring/menu.php They have a lot of interesting designs. Oh, and check out Hastings schemes on there. He covers your first alternative. I was right. A standard Strat switch will get you there.

If you want to save the single coil, you can use the PA-2 to match the impedance with the other pickups. However, you won't be able to connect all three pickups through the PA-2 at the same time. You can also get another PA-2 without the on-switch and connect that to the single coil and still use the PA-2 with the switch on the whole system, too.

The KFK is a brilliant piece of marketing. The kit doesn't cost any less than the individual parts did before and we must've had ten people on here in the last month looking for wiring diagrams.

Here's a quick lesson on EMG active pickups:

You cannot coil tap them, ever. No, the 89 is not a tapped pickup, it is a 2-in-1.

You cannot mix active pickups with passives, unless you put a preamp on the passives.

If you get little output from the pickups, they aren't broken. You wired the output jack incorrectly.

The wiring diagrams from EMG are VERY GOOD and they will usually FAX you a diagram if it is not available on their website.

If you have never installed pickups before and your previous experience with a soldering iron was on the fender of your '85 Camaro, take the guitar and pickups to a tech and pay them to do it for you.

you know if you add in the whole push pull trip you can wire it to get both neck and bridge with the pull of a knob in any selection.

as for the single coil you do need some circuitry but you can rob the parts off a dead motherboard modem or whatever, its like six parts. practically nill current draw. a simple buffer stage will suffice. this could actually all be built on perf and glued to the bottom of the single coil as to complement the wiring of the emg's.

if you use a mega switch you should be able to pull off the combo above. anything else and i would ahve to do some trickywiring. however if you have a carvin switch you can turn it into a six way switch if you are clever.

ciao for now.
