biliousfrog Posted January 22, 2007 Report Posted January 22, 2007 I bought myself Billy Gibbons guitar/car book over christmas & it's inspired me to re-think a few things for one of my projects. As it's going to have a rubbed down metal finish, like a car being prepped for a re-spray, I thought about adding a metal filler cap as a control cavity cover....whadya think? something like this would be ideal: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DUCATI-916-996-748-Q...1QQcmdZViewItem I've been browsing car parts stores for ideas...I'd rather be building but I can't just yet so I'll take what I can get I'm nearly finished with converting my shed into a very cramped workshop, got the money back from my dodgy neck & in the process of making a tool list....I'm sooo close to actually getting some serious work done it's driving me mad....but at least it's giving me some serious double-check time! westhemann Posted January 22, 2007 Report Posted January 22, 2007 you can get some nice neew ones like that from summit racing Quote
WezV Posted January 22, 2007 Report Posted January 22, 2007 I had to throw these into this discussion. Its my favorite use of car parts in a guitar done by a company calledBritish Custom Guitars Notice the unusual pickup selector! Quote
biliousfrog Posted January 22, 2007 Author Report Posted January 22, 2007 haha, yeah saw those in a magazine a while ago. There's one of those in Billy's book too. I dunno....they're clever an' all that but I can't help finding them tacky, almost like looking at a 70's Sci-Fi show & seeing what they thought guitars would look like in the future. Quote
WezV Posted January 22, 2007 Report Posted January 22, 2007 Sometimes tacky is good! I was speaking to the guy that makes them a couple of months ago and he really is crazy. My favorite part of the jaguar guitar has to be the pickup selector, i have seen sliding pickups before but the big chunky lever just makes it for me! Just a shame the neck alignment is so far out on the one pictured above. Quote
Mickguard Posted January 22, 2007 Report Posted January 22, 2007 What about knobs? Why can't I find any interesting knobs? I mean, those dice and skull knobs are okay, but why can't I find anything else? [sigh] Guess I'll just have to invent my own... Quote
biliousfrog Posted January 22, 2007 Author Report Posted January 22, 2007 What about knobs? Why can't I find any interesting knobs? I mean, those dice and skull knobs are okay, but why can't I find anything else? [sigh] Guess I'll just have to invent my own... there's a lot of funky cabinet knobs available in brushed steel & aluminium at the moment, also car parts could be used...I was looking at wheel valve caps, even bottle tops could be customised. Let's start the guitar recycle revolution! Quote
goat Posted January 22, 2007 Report Posted January 22, 2007 Bilious, Do me a favor and use one from a Triumph. That`s what Steve McQueen would do! Quote
biliousfrog Posted January 22, 2007 Author Report Posted January 22, 2007 my girlfriend would love that...I thought about pinching the one off her TR4a but it's a bit bulky & she scares me when she's angry I've been searching for some other classic car & bike parts to use but it's a bit tricky to know what to look for....ebay doesn't have a section for "things that could look cool when used on a guitar that were designed for something else". I need to search my grandad's car graveyard for ideas. Quote
Mickguard Posted January 23, 2007 Report Posted January 23, 2007 I need to search my grandad's car graveyard for ideas. Well, while you're there, I'd be interested in some old car model plates (you know, the numbers and letters, like GTI 505, etc)-- could make cool looking knobs. Quote
