Finishing A Guitar/drums?

Ok so i have built a guitar and i am trying to refinish my drumset and a friends.

First off I am going to Stain both the drum sets and guitar but I will ask the question about the guitar will come later.

I am under the impression that:

1. Get some stain like Miniwax

2. you sand down the drum guitar whatever (drum in this case)

3. get a damp sponge stain the drum

4. repeat steps 2 and 3 until you get the right color you want

5. this is were i am confused what clear coat should i use lacquer, rattle can stuff? i don't know tell me

did I miss anything? this seem right. so what lacquer should i use?

now for the guitar:

I want to do the same stuff as the drums except only stain on the top do black every where else and a stcil image on top.i do stencil graffitti and i made a custom stencil for my super metal unholy baphomet (look him up if you don't know who baphomet is) guitar :D , the stencil is basically a ram skull. Anyways I am going to do a dark grey stain and on top of that the stencil then a clear coat of some kind. My question is what kind of paint should I use and where can i get it? I already know 2 part is not good, espescially since i am only 16 and i don't want to get severe brain damage.

And if you hate reading here are the questions without the explanation:

what clearcoat should i use for drums and guitar?

staining proccess?

Paint i should use?

and don't worry I have all the equipment needed compressor, gun, everything.

thanks

Firstly, I can't directly answer your questions, especially regarding drums.

I would start by checking out the pinned topics in the inlay/finishing tutorial section. That should at least give you some idea. There is no one right answer for clearcoats, but you should find your out what your options are there. You'll probably also find good suggestions on dyes. Minwax may not be the best idea.

If you are able to ask more specific questions, and show that you have at least looked around the forum, the experts may be more likely to respond.

good luck.

well for the staining I have decided on woodburst brand anything better? and for the actual paint for the back I have decided on component poly urethane. but I am still lost on what clear coat, should I just go with component poly urethane clear? i don't know there doesn't seem to be a tutorial on clear coating. don't worry I have all the needed equipment. Thanks.
