GoodWood Posted February 17, 2007 Report Posted February 17, 2007 Im wondering if I can get by with a $100.00 drill press. They have 5.25 throats, rather than a 6" throat, which runs about double. Is there any big advantage to having the slightly larger press? I will cut soundholse with the router. Other than that, cheaper is better right now. Any serious luthier needs for a 6" throat? Thanks Quote

Thanks Drilling bridge posts on electrics, mostly. 5.25" reach should be more than enough to even cut acoustic guitar soundholes; not many guitars have a waist deeper than 10"! Quote
erikbojerik Posted February 17, 2007 Report Posted February 17, 2007 Given that most bodies are at least 12" wide and you often want to use the drill press in the center....you do the math. Quote
jammy Posted February 17, 2007 Report Posted February 17, 2007 I splashed out on this type of drill when I set up the workshop. You can adjust them to have a massive reach, and I'm glad I got it! Quote
