danews330
hey, i just wondering if red oak would work as a guitar body? and if so, would it even sound any good? thx in advance

Jon
The grain is no fun with Oak - the majority is extremely dense, solid from what I can see. But the open grain areas are very open. From my experience, oak splits extremely easily at the open grain areas. Weighs about as much as Northern Ash / Purpleheart.
SwedishLuthier
Oak is a perfectly OK tonewood. I have used it for two necks and they are all fine. One is even finished in oil. That neck is pretty rought to the feel but otherwise fine. My experience is that in necks the tone is somewhere in between mahogany and maple. MCH
I've started a second build. I'm using oak as a 1/2" cap. I build a lot of furniture and love the look of oak; very beautiful grain. I'll finish it with tung oil to preserve the look of the grain. Will post the results when done.

P90
I did a search on Oak a while back, and its generally not considered a good tone-wood. But dont tell Brian May... the neck/centerpiece of his Red Special guitar was Oak from an old fireplace mantle! (I also found that out when searching on Oak)
cherokee6
One of the members mentioned about a month ago that he had success with oak but it was from 100+ year old wood. He mentioned it was very stable at that point and better quality in grain than what you normally find. So, if its a good piece that you've got, go for it! !WOOD!!
This is a bass that I made out of oak.I have also made an SG and am in the process of making a Thinline Tele with an oak back and a maple cap.Tone on the bass is very good and the SG sounds excellent.Really tough wood to grainfill and sanding the endgrain is a challenge but is worth the effort.I would glue up the blank and let it sit for a while because no matter how dry it may check badly
