MP63 Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 (edited) I have a drill bit that is perfect for some bridge studs. About 15/32" I believe. The drill press is running slow today. What is the best speed for accuracy? Fast or slower? The wood is maple and mahogany. Thanks, Mike Edited April 10, 2007 by MP63 Quote
Jon Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 I use about 1550 on everything I drill with, brad point, forstner, or spade style bits all work well with all woods I have drilled into. I don't think going faster than this would be smart for the forstner style bits. Quote
Mattia Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 Depends on bit diameter, and bit type. Fast enough to cut and clear wood shavings, not so fast as to burn. If there's smoke, it's either too fast, or you're feeding too fast, pushing too hard, or not letting the chips clear enough. I think routerbits.com has a bit on appropriate bit speeds for various forstners (hint: slower than you think), but it may have been some other locale.... Quote
fookgub Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 hmm... interesting question. I tend to leave mine set at about 800 rpm unless I'm sanding or safe-t-planing. Quote
Myka Guitars Posted April 10, 2007 Report Posted April 10, 2007 I second Mattia, it really depends on what you are drilling. Here is a really nice chart that covers drill speeds for wood and metal: Drill Speed Chart ~David Quote
