Dan Posted December 19, 2002 Report Posted December 19, 2002 How can i take the frets out without harming the wood? Im taking them out to sand the wood down as theres blue marker all over it ( dont ask ). Cheers in advance Quote
Brian Posted December 19, 2002 Report Posted December 19, 2002 Some people heat them up with a soldering iron before pulling them but here is a tutorial on refreting that should help Have you tried wiping the fret board down with anything to remove the marker, such as Naptha or Lacquer thinner? Jehle Posted December 20, 2002 Report Posted December 20, 2002 Have you tried wiping the fret board down with anything to remove the marker, such as Naptha or Lacquer thinner? That's what I was wondering. I think there are some products designed to remove colors that are not set. Not sure if I'd use OxyClean, but something along that line. Quote
Dan Posted December 21, 2002 Author Report Posted December 21, 2002 I was thinking of that but i didnt know what to buy. Im going to have to get new 2 or 3 new frets as theyre marked badly. Is there any way to salvage them? Quote
Brian Posted December 21, 2002 Report Posted December 21, 2002 If they are just marked you could probably polish the marker off. Was it something like a Sharpie marker? Quote
Dan Posted December 21, 2002 Author Report Posted December 21, 2002 By 'marked' i meant dug into, pieces chipped out etc. Quote
Brian Posted December 22, 2002 Report Posted December 22, 2002 Best bet would be like your thinking, just replace the three because if you try to save them by a file and crown chances are your going to have to level the entire board which probably would take a lot of life out of the remaining frets.... Dan Posted December 22, 2002 Author Report Posted December 22, 2002 Fretwire comes in how lengths of how much? I might try and do them myself unless some kind and generous person would cut 3 frets for me? Quote
Brian Posted December 22, 2002 Report Posted December 22, 2002 Fret wire comes in 2' lengths usually which is plenty to do 3 frets Problem is it also comes in a wide varity of height's and width's Which means we would have to know what kind of wire is on your neck If you want to pick some up cheap this auction has it and click on see sellers other auctions for different sizes. LGM Guitars Posted December 22, 2002 Report Posted December 22, 2002 my personal recommendation is stay away from the stew mac fretwire. It's not as hard as the Dunlop wire, and it's also their own kooky sizes. It doesn't match the dunlop. You can buy a pack of 24 precut 2 5/8" lengths of fret wire from dunlop. You should easily be able to measure up your existing frets and find the size you need. Dunlop products Quote
