Identifying Pickups

what are the tell tale signs in knowing what kind of pickup you have;

theres a box of old pickups and some you can tell right away; but there are some 'musicman' style pickups that i dont know;

i looked up some schematics but they all have 9v ; and i dont know if thats for the preamp or the pickups or if thats the same thing!

basically im lost with powered pups

the magnets are exposed and there is a 4 wire ; white, black red and green

any help;would help

sounds like a normal 4 conductor passive to me. all active pups ive dealt with have 3 wires-grnd, hot and signal

so anything above the regular ground/live/and split will prolly be active?
