OK first off could I just buy a 2X4 and cut it down to 26" and try to scarf join it or should I just buy some maple in the dimensions needed??????

What would the dimensions be for neck blank for a les paul??????

Hmmm.. Been around here for a while. Do your home work B) , get ahold of plans or make plans, study up on wood. If you can't answer the questions you have asked you are not ready to build a neck :D , anyone who feeds you these bits of information is not doing you a favor :D .

If you wanted to practice on something, it wouldn't be a bad idea to do it with something inexpensive like a 2x4, but assuming you're talking about a 2x4 you get a Home Depot or similar, that's going to be pine, which is not suitable for a guitar neck. It's much too soft.

You need some sort of suitable hardwood: mahogany and hard maple are the most common. You'll have to take a look at the plans to see what the minimum dimensions of the blank will have to be.

I don't think the locally owned and operated hardware store has pine 2X4s but I'll have to check.

I might as well go with maple since it's one of the plentiful types of tree here in Iowa.

Sugar Maple makes some damn good syrup too.
