copperhead Posted July 22, 2007 Report Posted July 22, 2007 im getting ready to spray the finish on a guitar im using analind dyes for the translousent top and spraying lacquer, my queston is do i need any kind of sealer or can i use coats of lacquer Quote
Inisheer Posted July 22, 2007 Report Posted July 22, 2007 I believe that it depends on what type of wood you are using. On my current alder/maple project I just used the Colortone dye from Stewmac and then did many clear coats of lacquer on top and so far it seems ok. In this case the lacquer acts as the sealer so no additional materials are needed. Hope that helps. Quote
IPA or death Posted July 22, 2007 Report Posted July 22, 2007 Check out the finishing schedule at Stewmac's site (under "reference"): http://www.stewmac.com/freeinfo/ And read the many fine tutorials here. Some put dye directly on bare wood (like maple) then finish over it. Then there are those who seal the wood, mix the dye in lacquer, and spray the color on. This helps if you mess up a bit since you can clean it off and spray again. If it's dyed into the wood, it will take a lot of sanding to get it ready to go again. Remember, for the most part, there's more than one way to skin a cat. Quote
