Watch some of Jean Baudin's video's on youtube & you'll see the benefit of at least 8 strings (2x four fingers)...most of his stuff would be difficult with anything but 10. It could be argued that few people actually need more than one string & 24 frets but it would make playing funky octave patterns a chore. Now that pitch shifters are relatively cheap, do we need 2 octave necks? Of course we do, it makes playing easier for most things, same goes for ERB's. There were loads of similar discussions about 7-string guitars but they're hardly specialist instruments any more...same with 5/6 string basses. I don't use 24 fret necks but I don't think they're pointless...actually my strat only has 21 but it isn't often that I notice. It's easy to dismiss something because you don't "get it" but it doesn't mean that it's pointless, it's just not for you.

mmm im getting the feelin he jsut build it for the sake of making a monster

made out of cheap materials, possibility that he cant play it and he wants to sell it off

i think it looks dam ugly as well

ohh and Jon dw about it the guy knows what his talkin about and the with the range it "gives him a bigger range of sounds"hahahaha

whats anoying is that people treat him like a god....i mean 13 strings is a dam good effort but his not the only one making em

So you guys might like this one- I left a comment on one of his videos saying that with the way it was built, it wouldnt be strong or playable to any true extent. I went to take a look at the video again today and my comment is gone and when i try to post another it says i am blocked from posting on his videos. Seems that he was scared of what i said and didnt want anyone to know that his monster wont work properly. I feel censored.

That is funny :D . No frets, just toon :D it up and "find the sweet spots" :DB) .

I would not be brave enough to tune it up(well what ever tuned up would be). My god could you imagine what that could do to a person if they tried to tune it up to some pitch on each string and that headstock snapped(lets just say the neck didn't just bow as it tuned up, and whatever truss is in there held a fair bit of pressure before the headstock snapped). Well I would say that is what happens when you know just enough to be oh so very mistaken, and have just enough skill to have next to no skill at all. Kinda funny in a sick sort of way.

Peace,Rich

same thing happened to me and my friends. We kept posting that the woods wouldn't hold but he kept deleting them. He's trying to con someone who doesn't know how to pick out good basses out of 1000 pounds. And people keep praising him that he's made the perfect bass.

At around 5:55 of this one, you can witness the awesome electronics(?) cavity he's added. I'm guessing he used a phillips head to gouge that, yeuch.

You'd hope that the average joe is smart enough to realise how completely wrong that thing is, but considering it's on youtube... And we get stuff like this:

"Holy ****... man, you are f****** TALENTED. That's simply amazing. Great work, I always have respect for creative guys like you who think WAY outside the box."

- Muaguana

I'd say he'll probably make a sale.

so i was watching the first posted video and chuckling a bit, but then i started watching that photo slideshow and now i realize the big stink...did this dude seriously laminate a bunch of pine trim boards from home depot with duct tape and try to make a 13 string bass from it? this is a joke?

haha he has a slipknot tatoo on his left arm. what a knob.

for a second edit....what use is a truss rod if you gouge 2 channels in the neck and then glue plywood on top of them?

how much tension does it take to get an average bass string to tune. I wanna calculate how much the neck would bend...

Around 29-43 pounds on a 34" scale for a 5-string bass. If we take those same strings and take the scale down to a 26" scale, we're looking 17-25 pounds of tension per string, but I have no idea what he'd be tuned to. So let's say each string is tuned around 35 pounds of tension, that's 455 pounds of tension. I can't say if the neck can support that kind of tension, I have no idea how thick it is. But I guarantee that over time it will bend due to poor choice of neck laminates.

The 8-string I'll have complete in the next few months will have about 300 pounds of tension.

This video shows the neck to be made from a hollow frame?:

I've tried adding my video as a video response but I'm blocked & I can't send him messages either. Anyone else feel free to try, it would be good to get a response from him & maybe some of the moron's that are supporting him.

BTW, you wouldn't believe how much effort it took to make that sound effect :D

Dont class us Aussies with him, it will drag the rest of us down. He is from the UK. Let him drag Wez down with him B)

:D

I sometimes worry i might be a bit responsible for this kind of thing!! :D With the day job in a school obviously a lot of kids are interested in me making guitars and there are always a few that come and declare they are going to make something and the have found a great bit of pine thats gonna be perfect - cant help but think they never would have got the idea if it wasnt for me blabbering on.. I try and educate them but only so much does in!!!!

Certainly not saying i am responsible for this monstrosity though, the guy is only 2 years younger than me so i am fairly sure i wont have taught him at any point!!

If the guy had a bit of humility and had done this for a fun experiment we all could have given him a lot of help - - but with arrogance i like his i dont really feel he would ever except constructive criticism.

As far as i can tell he has the fretboard made from veneer sitting on a frame of wood - so chances are you cant even fret the thing. Give me a bottle of wine and i might be able to play some slide on it.... should give some interesting sound effects - mainly wood cracking sounds!!!

I have posted this on other forums - so far no-one seems to be falling for it!!!

:D

Oh man what an enjoyable few minutes I just had watching those videos. I'm glad no one is really falling for it yet. Pretty scary watching the construction video on it. The nine minute one, I couldn't turn away, it was like one of those red asphalt movies from drivers ed.

I figured out the neck, its the orginal pine shaved down thin, then routed for truss rods, then a popsicle stick frame with some more thin pine boards and finally veneer. So half hollow, half not. Definately a bonus though having the popsicle stick frame supporting the truss rods. Solid construction right there.

Clamps?? We don't need no stinking clamps!! Who needs clamps when you got tape and glue sticks.

Anyhow, that was the comic relief I needed for the week, that was some good stuff. As WezV said, no big deal if he was doing it for fun, experiment or whatever, but to even consider that thing super or even real is scary. Maybe, I should suggest to him to do an experiment I wouldn't bother with, semi hollow mdf, lol. Oh well, thanks for sharing guys, that was awesome. J

Yep, very bad tattoo's. I like some of the things he has tried to have done but they fail so badly!! - but why are so many of them unfinished!!!

he probably wouldnt like my tattoo designs either but at least you cant fault the artwork on mine. I went to book in a couple of weeks ago for having my arm expanded into a full sleeve and i have to wait till october they are so busy. but at least i will finish one before moving onto the rest of my body!!
