Hawk Studio Posted August 11, 2007 Report Posted August 11, 2007 Has anyone here used KTM-9 water based finish? http://www.graftedcoatings.com/wood_clear_ktm9.asp?iid=25 I just purchased some from LMI to experiment with but was wondering if anyone had experience with this product either positive or negative. I'm considering finishing a bass with it. Thanks Quote
SwedishLuthier Posted August 11, 2007 Report Posted August 11, 2007 (edited) KTM-9 is OK. It does not dry as hard as Nitro, but harder than the waterborne finish StewMac sells (Colourtone). The earlier StewMac finish (crystalac) was harder but dries slightly bluish. Colourtone has the same problems and thus is the one I think is most inferior of the three types I have tested. The LTM-9 has no blue in it as I can see after two guitars finished with it. For more opinions use the search engine. KTM*9 is a good start as the wildcard will make shure KTM, KTM-9 and KTM9 all turns up in the result list (I think). EDIT: PS the finishing section is a better place to start this type of thread. And also to search for similar topics. Edited August 11, 2007 by SwedishLuthier Quote

Hawk Studio Posted August 11, 2007 Author Report Posted August 11, 2007 Oooops...I missed the finishing forum. I'm headed there with this. Thanks for the tips guys. Quote
j. pierce Posted August 12, 2007 Report Posted August 12, 2007 I've been using the stuff, and love it. Granted, I have no other finishing experience with this sort of stuff, so nothing to compare it to, but I'm happy with the finishes I've gotten, and they've stood up to some abuse. (Hardcore bands, touring, etc.) If use some pretty ghetto spray gear with lots of luck. Basically follow Mike Doolin's instructions (linked from LMI) as close as I can it's treated me well. Pay special attention to the prep work, particularly sealing/grainfilling with epoxy. The times I've had less than stellar looking finishes, it was from doing this part poorly, whether it be application or levelling, and that telegraphs through the finish. The KTM-9 itself is fairly forgiving stuff. Quote
