ultraman
my question is can you use a regular amplifier like a head by plugging it into a cabinet but keeping the amps speakers still in use?
renablistic
yes. The amp must have an extension speaker output, though. Many marshalls come with this.
ultraman
but doesnt it stop the amps speakers when outputted?
krazyderek
on some models yes, other outputs where meant to be used at the same time as the speakers in the amp, depends how you wire it if you do it yourself
canuckguitarist
what about (this is for 1 speaker amps) soldering another wire from each of the 2 solder joints into the new cabinet. like this (beautiful drawing isn't it)
YDoesGodMockMeSo
^ you can't just add speakers whilly-nilly. You need to take into account resistance (Ohms) and what the power amp can or cannot handle. You may end up blowing a speaker or worse your amp. westhemann
i used to do this all the time with a fender combo amp i had.i unhooked the factory speakers and just ran it to a 4 by 12.believe me when you hook up to a full cab you will not want those factory speakers messing up your sound. but yes it will run a cab just fine

Guest Litchfield Custom Gutars
If you use a stereo jack as your output jack, it can be wired to shut off the stock speak.
Pushead
Would this be considered parallel or in-series? I know too little resistance is bad for the amp, but more resistance (to a point) isn't that bad.
tsl602000
Ultraman, what amp do you have?

Saber
Yes, O = ohms. That diagram shows a parallel connection. You would need two 16O speakers connected in parallel to give you 8O. Or you could connect two 4O speakers in series to give you 8O. Edit: That's weird. I copied and pasted your ohm symbol and it posted as an O.
