I'm starting plans for a new instrument and I'm currently on the hunt for some lightweight machine heads for it.

So far I've found the hipshot non-lockers, which seem to be made on a similar vein to their superlight bass heads. Are there any other units I should be considering? Quality is more important than price.

Try the open back Sperzels. The only place I could find them was TKinstruments.

+1 on the open backed Sperzels (Shane at High Mountain Tonewoods is a dealer, and a pleasure to work with), or if you want really top quality in a vintage vein you might go with Waverlies. Gotoh's open backed tuners are also high quality, and I quite like the Grovers (good quality, but cheaper than the rest).

The mini machines (gotoh 510, schaller, whatever) with wood or plastic buttons will save a lot of weight as well.
