inlay help plz

hey...

after looking at all the inlay threads at the mo ( B) ) i'm thinking about taking the plunge and having a go

i have a 3/4 size neck laying around as was thinking of doing a fairly simple inlay..

question 1 ...as i have access to a CNC miller can i use this to carve out the necessary wood? and i how can i get it to stay down? the miller uses suckers that hold down flat work but with curved stuff its not so good.

question 2...is it an absolute must that i remove the frets cos i get the impression that refretting isn't particularly easy especially without the right tools.

thanks

dan :D

I think you'll probably end up ruining the neck if you use the cnc machine. The take lots of time and experience to set up hich is fine if you're doing 100 necks but for just one you'd be better served to use a Dremel and such the old fashioned way.

2. unless you're just putting in dots, you'd better pull the frets out too.

PS I'm sure someone will jump in here and step all over me if I'm wrong so don't take my adive alone. wait for more opinions on this

if you want to practice, just dont bother with the neck. unless your gonna use it it could be more time wasted pulling the frets. you could just practice on a head stock inlay or just get a peice of nice wood and do a few inlays in that. its all practice and it doesnt have to be practice on a neck. this way once your confident in your skills you can inlay in a fresh new fret board then put the frets in. but this is just the way i learned how you can do what you want.

i only reason i was planning on using the neck was that its just laying around mocking me..and if it gets ****ed i don't really care cos it is a piece of crap

what is the easiest way to remove/replace frets?

The frets would need to go.

In my opinion even if it's just dots.

It would be a pain to level each one Vs. the whole board.

I do agree with everyone.

Scrap the CNC and learn the old way first, get the methods, then jump into tech stuff.

Do a non-fretboard inlay first. Your first one will be a challenge, as was mine.

It will most likely be time consuming as well.

Do either a scrap piece, or headstock, but save that neck for your third or so inlay.

Get some cutting in first, and routing.

Just my two cents..

Craig.
