nikrayne
I'm currently building a Vox teardrop-style guitar & I was wondering what kind of pickups you all would suggest. The tone I'm looking for is a sharp & jangly tone, but not so thin that it can't handle some fuzz. In other words, clean I'd love a folk-rock sound (Byrds, Love, Quarter After), but if I go into more of a shoegazing, fuzzed out mode (Jesus & Mary Chain 'Psychocandy', Spacemen 3 drone) I dont want it to crap out on me. I don't need any sort of deep bass, more of a mid/high range. I was thinking about going with two humbuckers, but if you can think of any better suggestions let me hear, I'm open to changing my mind. Thanks, Nik R.
j. pierce
They're a little frustrating because the unconventional shape make pickup swaps difficult depending on the route underneath (are you using a pickguard?) But for these kind of sounds, I really love firebird style minihumbuckers. I've been using the Dimarzio brand (not the "hot" minibucker, but the regular ones) although I hear the lollars are killer as well. With Series/Parallel/Single coil switch for the rails, you can get a bit more versatility as well.
