txisan Posted November 27, 2003 Report Posted November 27, 2003 i want to put a 1/4" quilted maple top to my soloist body. the question; How can i fold it to accomodate the cut for the arm?? Quote
LGM Guitars Posted November 27, 2003 Report Posted November 27, 2003 water and a vacuum press. Basically that's it, you might be able to clamp it down, but it'd be tough. Either way you'll need to soak the hell out of it to make it want to bend down, don't forget you'll want to plane that same 1/4" off the top of your guitar before you start. Quote
noob Posted November 27, 2003 Report Posted November 27, 2003 Something like this.... Scroll down to see the vacuum press http://www.glguitars.com/factorytour/tour-...page3/tour3.asp Quote
daveq Posted November 27, 2003 Report Posted November 27, 2003 This topic has come up several times over the past two months. I have done it with a maple top which was a little less than 1/4" by using a clothing iron and a whole bunch of clamps. I'm getting ready to do a full 1/4" top soon. I think Scott R. did a 1/4" top the same way. In fact, he's the one who suggested this method to me. Some people actually rout channels in the bottom of it where it will bend. I think you need to use binding if you do this though. I haven't tried this method myself but I thought it would be worth mentioning. The mimf archive has some info on this. If you choose to use mimf, make sure you don't ask any questions before doing a whole bunch of research first - they are very **** about this. If you use the iron method (using the steam from it, of course) - make sure you have plenty of spool clamps and be sure that the slope is very gradual. Also - stay away from the bookmatch line! Good luck. Quote
