jacksonjj2
a wilkinson? It is a tremolo bridge on a mexican strat (not sure if that matters). I am brand new to the idea of "doctoring" guitars, but I plan on doing a bunch of stuff to this one! Thanks in advance for the help!! westhemann
is it a six skrew trem or a 2 stud trem on your strat? the wilkinson i believe was made to retrofit on the 2 stud model,if i am not mistaken.someone correct me if i am wrong but i think on a 2 stud trem it will slide right in
westhemann
on a six screw trem,on the other hand it can still be done but you need to drill holes for the inserts (in the correct place of course)and cover up the old screw holes in the finish somehow. jacksonjj2
Thanks, I don't know if it is a six screw or a two screw (I don't have the guitar yet, my cousin is giving it to me in a couple of weeks), but it is a stock mexican strat (prob about 2 years old). Does anyone know if those trems are two or six screws?
westhemann
the reason i asked is because i believe they are both offered on the mexican strat
jacksonjj2
Oh...well, I guess I'll just have to wait and see then? Which version (2 screw or six) is the most expensive for them to use? Is there a quality difference between the two? I guess I was just figuring they use the cheapest, lowest quality trem they have on the mexican strats (but I could be wrong, I honestly don't know jack about fenders). westhemann
i am no fender expert but they use the same hardware and woods on the mexican ones as far as i know.
JackyB
2 screws are a lot more common on Strats. I think the fixed bridge versions mostly use 6 screws.
jbkim
2 screws are a lot more common on Strats. I think the fixed bridge versions mostly use 6 screws. Really? Wow, things must have really changed. I've been out of the loop for too long. I was under the impression that the canonical Strat had 6 screws for the trem. jacksonjj2
Thanks for everyone's responses. I looked around on the web and it appears that mexican strats have the six screw vintage tremolos on them. Going on that assumption, it looks like I'll have more work to do to get the Wilkinson on there, but it'll be worth it.
jbkim
Wilky's are pretty cool... although I'm a floyd man. Don't forget to factor in a slippery nut and locking tuners into your mods. You'll need these to get the most out of a stock trem to wilky conversion. I'd go with a graphite nut instead of a roller nut. For locking tuners, any of the sperzel, LSR or steinberger ones are good...sperzels would be cheapest but the LSR or steinys look cool . Guest Litchfield Custom Gutars
The mex strats have a vintage 6 screw bridge. Stew mac sells a wilkinson/gotoh for this as retrofit.
