Bmth Builder
Hey on bolt on necks do you guys clean coat the bit that is incontact with the body wood or do you mask that section off and just clear coat the rest of the neck? I know some people leave the neck pocket free of paint, so I was wondering if they do the same for the corresponding neck tenon. syxxstring
Necks I clear the whole thing. The pocket I may or may not paint depending on how I am mounting the body to finish it.
Bmth Builder
Cheers, do you paint your bolt on neck pockets? Any one else wanner lend their 2 cents?
Prostheta
I just did on my last build, although I covered up the brass inserts with adhesive dots. It really won't make a difference in terms of coupling unless the paint is horrendously thick and soft. Whatever works best for yourself I guess. wohzah
I never did, I dont finish any thing until the guitar is completely glued up, not including hardware. With some finishes you can even fret the guitar before finishing.

Makes a lot more sense to me, more so on a set neck where you can shape the heel post-gluing and once the clearcoat is on, sometimes you can't even feel the joint I don't see much harm in clearcoating the heel on a bolt-on, though. I've done it before, and I think it makes the joint fit tighter, even if you're losing wood-to-wood contact.
westhemann
On a bolt on,you should seal the pocket and the neck tenon unless you want your paint to lift over time from moisture wicking in from the unpainted portion.
