Adam Brown
Hey Guys: So I'll be sanding the back of the headstock of my Les Paul Special in the next little while, and I was wondering what is the best way preserve the serial number, and the "made in the USA" that is engraved back there. Thanks a whole lot, Adam
renablistic
I don't think you could. The best bet i would say is to write the number down, and make a decal to put it back on when your done finishing. As for the engraving, is it burned in, or just "chipped" in? I would say after sanding use filler to fill in whats left, and then re-engrave it. But that's me.
ultraman
why do you want to sand it?
Adam Brown
renabalistic: thanks... um... it looks sort of just pressed in... but out of the two options, I would say that it is probably burned, like they do to cows... (poor girl) Ultraman: The guitar had already been partially sanded, and hacked with before I bought it... I'm going to try my best to give her the love she deserves
Brian
I think I would practice the old "extreme light sanding" in that area just to remove the top finish by hand using a block and some very fine grit paper. I wouldn't try to take it all off just lighten it up to a point where you can blend in the new finish. You can always refill the indentation with a rag tip dipped in paint and wipe the excess off to bring out the stamp.
