Well...Nothing like a case of the flu to bring production to a screeching hault. :D The last 3 full days have been nothing but: Bed...bathroom...bed...bathroom...ect. I hope to get back on track soon.

I am right there with ya, brother! It's how I got on this site in the first place. Bed-ridden and nothing to do...

OK...After 5 1/2 days of the flu, I think (hope) I'm back. The bright side is I think I lost about 20 lbs :D

Here is the maple neck that goes on the 2nd prototype. When finished, this one will go to a friend for Christmas. A little late, but what the hey. He really liked this neck, but not the frets, so I poped them out, and will replace them with the Jescar gold EVO jumbo's.

I wanted to use the laser to burn spots in the FB, but the end result was too rough. So, instead I "dirtied up" the board with various dyes. It wasnt exactly the effect I was looking for, but it will do I think. If I don't like the finished product, I can always make another neck later on.

Just got off the phone with Mike Learn. The 2 prototypes are going to him for airbrush as soon as I get them base coated. :D If youve never seen his work, check it out...it's amazing:

I hadn't heard of Mike Learn until I checked out the link, some awesome artwork there. Neat guitar you got going on there too, look forward to seeing the end results after it's painted.

OK... I have been doing R&D for this project since my last post. The customer that get's this neck wanted it to be dirtier. He wanted an "Excessive...over the top...almost cremated look". So, here you go. I'm not sure if I can get it much dirtier looking without ruining the playability. Although, I'll probobly add some more black splatters before fretting. The inlay is the glow material I mentioned in an earlier post. It's .125" thick, with the glowing part at the bottom. The idea was to make it look like the radioactive material was splattered on, and is burning down into the board.

I also decided to make each neck slightly different. The distressing will range from mild, to extreme. Let me know what you guy's think...

I spent yesterday working on 3 necks. All with maple boards. One is a non distressed neck. This pic is of the one with the glowing inlay. The idea was to distress the back of the neck while maintaining a smooth surface. At the same time I wanted a hint of a caution bar design. I used yellow analine dye, then masked it off, and put the black stripes on, again with analine dye. After sanding with 500 grit, I went back and did the splatter. Then sanded with 1000 grit. The neck is very smooth. It should darken up a bit after the clear goes on.

I'm a not a big fan of faux-distressed finishes, but this is something entirely different; and I love it!

I agree. Great job on the post-apocalyptic look.
