does anybody here know a source to buy red (bright red, not tortise shell) abs plastic binding? i did find some red and green dyed maple ones on stewmac or lmii, but i'm trying to find something really bright.

also, i've been looking for plastic sheets to cut inlays from, and the only things i find are 1/8" or thicker. does anybody know where to find some thinner pieces.

i'm basically going for the same look as those ibanez rg 770 dx 1987 re-issues, but with binding to match.

on a different note, is there any way to get mother of pearl blanks in colors. the only things i've seen are the pearl color, gold, and i think i remember seeing some dark gray ones.

all suggestions are greatly appreciated. maybe you know a place to find some other colors of these materials; that would be appreciated also.

I know I've seen sheets of red plastic material on eBay on occasion - should be easy enough to cut into strips on a bandsaw or such.

As far as thicker inlay material - I'd be tempted to inlay it proud, and file it down. With micromesh sandpapers, it wouldn't be hard to restore the lustre to plastics.

When you want really differnt colours for inlay, you'll want to start looking at man-made materials. (It sounds like you already have) There's a wide variety of recon stone materials and fancy acrylic plastics available - searches for inlay materials on google will find you some, but a lot of it gets used for knife and pen blanks, which is another place to look. Sorry I don't have more specifics.

Also, you could try contacting Doug at Parable guitars - (he posts here often, search for his "Nuclear Prophet" build in the in progress section; I believe Parable is linked from the main PG site as well.) He deals with some pretty interesting inlay materials - I believe he sells some of his CNC'd inlays, (which could save you some time) at least I feel like I remember another builder here getting their unique inlays through him, and he may be able to point you in the right direction for an inlay material that suits your needs.

j.pierce, thanks for the input. i think if i went with the plastic for the inlays, your point about just letting them be tall and them sanding them down would probably be the best option. in the 1/8", you can find it in 2' x 4' sizes for a few dollars.

i've also been reading up more on the resin stuff like inlace. maybe i'll try that some day. i like that it looks like you can pretty much mix up any color you want.

i'm also kinda seeing that making the red binding will be my only option if i wanted to go with plastic.

thanks for your thoughts.
