iSoto
Hi again guys! Over the past few months I've become somewhat of a Gibson spam. I really like superstrat style guitars, and the Epiphone EM-1 (along with it's siblings, Epiphone EM-2 EX & FX) are the only Gibson/Epiphone superstrat style guitars there are (I'm talking about new guitars, not vintage ones like the Q series or the U2 etc). I found this Epiphone on a really good price (around $150 with shipping and everything), and it seems like a perfect candidate for several mods like: changing the pickups, refinishing, adding a nice Kahler blah blah. But my question is: Is it worth it? Considering I do everything right, will I have a good quality guitar in the end, or just a bad quality guitar with expensive parts on it? What do you think? Thanks in advance!

Your response is highly appreciated! -Rogger
mayhem
Well, if you like the guitar, it feels good in your hands, inspires you to play/practice more... Then by all means, buy expensive parts for it. If not, then you might look elsewhere.
iSoto
Yeah, but still. Is it worth doing it? I guess what kinda "intrigues" me is the quality of the woods. The list price for the guitar is $300, and I can buy it for about half the price. Is it worth spending money and time on such a guitar? Will it turn out to be a good guitar or will it just remain a crappy cheap guitar? I don't mind spending 100 euros on a guitar, but I hate having a guitar that I won't be playing. I can always save some more money, but I really get connected to my instruments, and I just hate watching a guitar rot a stand. So should I just buy the guitar or save up and try to mod a more expensive instrument?
SwedishLuthier
Well: http://www.epiphone.com/default.asp?Produc...CollectionID=18 says it is maple neck, rosewood fretboard and alder body. Non of those are considered crappy wood types. So if the wood is OK (and you can really only say that your guitar is not made of inferior pieces when you have it in hand) I cannot see any reason why it isn't doable. If modding an instrument is what you really would like to do my advice is definitely to start with a cheep instrument. there is always a risk that you do something stupid (believe me, I have made a lot of mistakes) and ruin the guitar. Then it is better to know that it is "only" a guitar for 150 instead of a guitar for like 500.
