Grounding Issues

I just replaced all the electronics in a friends J.B PLayer strat all controls and pickups work fine but after stringing it up I get a hum that gets louder when I touch the strings or bridge but get no hum at all when I touch the jack plate. I haved wired several strats and teles and have never had this problem before.

I have everything grounded to the back of the volume pot and a ground wire running to the bridge(a Kahler knock off). I even popped off the bridge and touched the ground wire and still get the loud hum. It's not the amp or cables I've checked with my other guitars. anyone else had this problem??

Sounds like your signal wire and ground are reversed at the jack.

OMG!! I just took a look and that is exactly what it is. I can't believe that's what it was, I'll get the iron warmed up and get those switched around.

Thanks Mammoth guitars.

Are you getting any sound from the guitar when you strum the strings? If not then it would probably be what mammoth guitars said: You got the wires the wrong way round on that jack.

If you do get a sound through the amp when you strum the strings then you may have got the ground wire from the strings attached to the live somehow. Check where the ground wire is going/making contact. If it's none of those then I have absolutely no idea.

Good luck.

I was getting sound but Mammoth was right I had the wires reversed, just switched them and it sounds great.

I still can't believe that's what it was, I was in such a hurry to get it done for my friend that I didn't pay attention to what I was doing.

Lesson learned. :D

Hmm...good to know. I haven't done that yet, but I'm sure that I probably will one day. :D
